Whoops! No ‘e.’

This notion came from County Commissioner Jean Curtiss on closing some polling places.
The consolidation process did not have to be dragged out in the public, said Curtiss, but it was.
So it was, like, a favor? Reporter Kim Briggeman transcribed her full statement here. (That’s where the “Whoops!” comes from, but for spelling, not closing.)
The plan [...]

Houseman pulls a Hendrickson

Why is one fee jumping from $400 to $1,000? The question came from the Ward 2 seat where John Hendrickson used to hang his hat, and it sounded like a question the fiscal conservative would ask.
This time, though, Councilman Roy Houseman was doing the asking about the Bonner Park Bandshell “with amplification” deposit. (I [...]

All sworn in

And they’re all solemnly sworn in. Here’s the video from Bill Schwanke. Mayor John Engen administered the oath to councilors.
“When government works right, we have elections and people step up to take office,” Engen said.
He took his own oath, too, administered by Judge Donald Louden, who did a backatcha. Engen said he was swearing in [...]

New budget watchdog

Councilman John Hendrickson passes on the microphone to Roy Houseman. That’s official. His unofficial role as a budget watchdog also will be filled.
Councilwoman Lyn Hellegaard, who worked as a banker for 20 years, said Hendrickson passed her the torch. (This photo from her City of Missoula Web page.)
“I was a banker for many years, [...]

Everyone is swearing

I thought City Clerk Marty Rehbein was the one to swear in the elected officials. Nope
Noon on Monday, the municipal judge, mayor and councilors take their oaths of office. The swearing in part? It’s musical chairs. Here’s the rundown from Rehbein.
“The Mayor will swear in Judge Louden.  Judge Louden will swear in the Mayor.  [...]

Lewie laments

Lucky Lewie. He’s in sunny Tucson, Ariz. When reached for comment on the decision by the Commissioner of Political Practices, Lewie Schneller admitted he’d missed a step on the brochure, but also said doing so wasn’t the end of the world.
“I do accept the responsibility for my failure to make those footnotes in terms of [...]

Busting Lewie Schneller

Remember that name? Lewie Schneller ran against Councilman Ed Childers a couple years ago. Childers accused his opponent of some no-nos in Schneller’s campaign brochure, and turns out the Commissioner of Political Practices agrees.
Read the decision below. Possible penalties here
Closure is great, but the wheels didn’t churn nearly as quickly on this one as they [...]

No second place

The Indy has this piece* describing the somber scene at The Depot on election night. That’s where some of the council minority members were hanging out. Drinks in hand but the scene’s sober. Happy pills recommended.

Halted by a woman

So the day the (unopposed) Mayor John Engen was ushered into a second term by 96 percent of voters, it was time to find out who Missoula’s longest serving mayor was.
That was Dwight Mason, first elected in 1937. He served for 10 years, until the only woman ever to be mayor in Missoula knocked him [...]

Mail bags are heavy

And election ballots are rolling in. At the Missoula County Elections Office, Debbe Merseal said 1,812 voted ballots were in as of yesterday.
A big pile got dropped off today, too, and more will be on their way next week.
“I expect we’ll get a pretty large influx of ballots back probably Monday and Tuesday, after the [...]
